Iām Georges Cubas. I started programming in the mid-1980s on the Amstrad CPC 464 my father had bought, and Iāve never really stopped since.
What interests me
I like systems with simple rules that produce complicated behavior: a game, a simulation, a parser, an experiment with an AI. I also like building things to see how far they can go, even when theyāre useless. My Roguelike is one of them.
I like science fiction because it lets us look at our world from the outside and explore alternatives to reality, in a more enjoyable way than philosophy does. Iāve written a few pieces about it, like When We Stop Deciding - IBM, Asimov, and the Accountability Gap.
Sociology interests me too, to understand our world from the inside this time. It will be my field of study when I go back to university.
This blog
This blog is a notebook. I keep the solutions that took me a while to find so I donāt have to look for them twice, and maybe so someone else doesnāt have to either. There are also texts unrelated to tech, in the culture section.
This is the fourth version of the site. It started around 2006 on the Opera platform, then Tumblr, then WordPress. Today itās a static site generated with Quartz, and I explained how in this post (in French).
Work
I have an industrial computing engineering degree (ENSIAME, 2003) but above all Iāve been a PHP developer for about twenty years, freelance and then as an employee, working with Symfony and PrestaShop. I work remotely from the Deux-SĆØvres region of France (not far from the navel of the world).
Since May 2024 Iāve been at ClubVET, a veterinary purchasing group. Before that there was 50 Factory (motorcycle parts), Coommunication, a Swiss agency, for four years, and above all Pourchienetchat, a Luxembourg pet shop that I followed from its creation to its closure. The details are on LinkedIn.
